Maher made the comments in his show Real Time, opining that people didn’t stop watching the 23-time Grand Slam champion despite her race.

The comments came about in a debate with radio host Charlamagne Tha God, who drew attention to the way WNBA star Caitlin Clark has risen in popularity over the likes of Angel Reese.Fellow competitor A’ja Wilson had also commented on the matter with a similar sentiment, stating that Black athletes don’t get marketed the same way as their white counterparts. Refuting that idea, Maher said:

“Why was Serena Williams such a big star? Because people like that. They didn’t not watch her because she was Black, right?”

One fan agreed with the comments, remarking that Maher’s remarks are “perfect” and that nobody in the tennis world cared about what color Serena Williams was.
“Maher made the perfect point. Serena actually made a generally more “white” sport even more popular than it was. Nobody cared what color she was,” the comment said.
