Wimbledon is one week away and Iga Swiatek is confirmed as the top seed at the event due to her still being at the top of the WTA Rankings.
It’s been a very interesting year for Swiatek overall. There wasn’t much trophy-lifting like last year but she still managed to put together an impressive performance when it mattered ending up as the Roland Garros champion.
That saved her 2000 points which is the only reason why she’s still ranked number one but it’s deserving. She’s now the longest-serving active player as world no. 1 on WTA Tour with 65 weeks, replacing Simona Halep.
Swiatek has 8940 points as of today, an 874-point lead over Aryna Sabalenka who is currently number two. That could have been different if Sabalenka didn’t throw away a huge lead against Karolina Muchova and if Swiatek didn’t end up as champion in Paris, but another Grand Slam is right behind the corner.
Neither of them is worried about their seeding at Wimbledon or general ranking position as they’re both quite clear of Elena Rybakina who is number 3 with 5090 points. Her withdrawal from Roland Garros hurt her quite a bit on the rankings as she was poised for a deep run and plenty of points. Luckily the Kazakh player should have a great result on grass reducing the deficit further in pursuit of her goals.
Not far behind Rybakina is Jessica Pegula with 4905 points. Caroline Garcia has 4845 at number 5 while the rest of the pack with Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Petra Kvitova, and Barbora Krejcikova all have less than 4000 points, and are quite close to each other.
The rest of the Top 100 featured some changes as well. Donna Vekic is back in the Top 20, Bianca Andreescu is out of the Top 50. Simona Halep is barely hanging on 50 (at number 50) but she’s certainly going to fall down as she’s unable to play due to her suspension. Camila Giorgi is another player who is slipping.
Venus Williams also made a pretty big jump this week. Up 143 spots to number 543 following some good matches in Birmingham. She’ll be in Wimbledon so don’t miss that spectacle. When it comes to the rankings, check them out on our dedicated rankings page.
